My First Blog
I'm a principal. My professional life has been super crazy. You think I'd be used to the spin, but it's really been hard to keep up with all of the systemic changes that continue to happen in my school district. Recently, after having a near crisis in confidence in public education at the end of a very bad day, I had considered actually returning to the classroom. I wondered how much of a pay cut my family could afford. I thought it over a few days, and then decided not to make any rash moves. After all, there were aspects to the job that had attracted me in the first place. What keeps me coming back, year after year? A committment to educational equity. A committment to doing anti-racist, anti-classist and anti-ablest work for my students. A committment to seeing the strengths in others, and in my own limitations and biases. By journaling my everyday conversations and behaviors with students, families, faculty and staff, I hope to be able to better analyze much own everyday acts and determine how it helps or hurts my work towards achieving educational equity.
